On Mockingjay Part 2
/Musings on Mockingjay Part 2.
Read MoreWow. What a Sunday! I started doing a blog audit of my old posts during the NFC Championship game today (to calm my nerves before the Seahawks' incredible, unreal win.) While I waited for my heart rate to calm down, I took a trip down memory lane, reading posts I wrote in 2008 & 2009. Holy shit. There's a lot that spoke out to me during this reminiscing, but what rang loud and clear is how much I miss that editorial voice I had when I first started my blog. I sounded so free. My spirit was free, back then, to say whatever TF I wanted because I didn't know if anyone was reading this anyway! I want to get back to that. I will get back to that. To write as if I'm free again.
Free at last, if you will. See what I did there? :P
If you're not partaking in a Day of Service on this Martin Luther King, Jr. observance day (and maybe even after your service!), you should make time to go see Selma. Regardless of what those ignorant Oscar voters can't seem to see, Selma is a masterpiece and if it doesn't leave you with all the thoughts and all the feels - then I don't know if we can be friends.
And some more background on the movie, via:
Jezebel: An Interview with Ava DuVernay, Groundbreaking Director of 'Selma'
The Daily Beast: The Revolutionary Women of 'Selma'
It's crazy to think that the events portrayed in Selma happened not too long ago. Perhaps even crazier, that much of that ignorance that inspired non-violent protests are still happening today. We still have a lot of work to do.
I was invited to preview Mockingjay last night in exchange for some social media work I did. Now that I'm hopped up on movie nachos and caffeine (sorry Jenn), here are some of my scattered thoughts on the movie:
The political undertones of Hunger Games and Catching Fire come front and center in Mockingjay. There's a lot to read into with this movie and much more to think about afterwards - which is why I think it might be the best one in the series so far.
Such. good. casting. Effie Trinket (Elizabeth James) and Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) are some of my favorites in all three movies, but Julianne Moore as (Madam) President Coin of District 13 is excellent.
"Everyone will want to kiss you, kill you or be you." - Effie to Katniss. Also my new life mantra #true #bossbitches
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant as Plutarch. RIP.
Why does the District 13 head of security look like Future?
If Lana del Rey doesn't cover that little ditty Katniss sings in District 12 (Are you, are you...?), that's a real missed opportunity!
The absence of Lenny Kravitz appearances is felt (by me)
Everything Effie says and does in this movie gives me life. Her turbans. "I'm a political refugee, and I've been confined to a life of jumpsuits." GET YOUR LIFE GIRL
The Capitol made Peeta look like Nick Carter. How dare they!
Liam Hemsworth is so fine. Miley what is wrong with you girl?
There's just so much to think about during and after this movie. It's gonna take several viewings and maybe a re-read of the book to digest it all. I'm sure I'll have more to say after I hit 'post', but I hope you have your tix and have a great time seeing it!
Better put this on your calendar now because this exhibit will definitely sell out! Seattle is the first stop on the Smithsonian Exhibition's 12-city national tour of iconic movies from the epic. George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala and a bikini worn by Princess Leia when enslaved by Jabba the Hutt.

“Craftsmanship and artistry in costume design are valued creative components in the Star Wars saga,” said Lucas. “The detailed precision of a design can be as bold a measure of storytelling as words on a page, leading to truths at the core of a character, situation or shared history. From initial concept drawings to complex physical constructions, the costumes featured in this exhibition serve to further define crucial aspects of worlds created to move, educate and entertain us—to inspire the imagination.”

Presenting 60 of the finest hand-crafted costumes from the first six blockbuster Star Wars films, the exhibition uncovers the challenges, the intricate processes and the remarkable artistry of Lucas, the concept artists and costume designers. The costumes reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the story.

Short films in Star Wars and The Power of Costume provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and include interviews with artists, designers and actors. The visitor experience will be enhanced by interactive flip books featuring sketches, photographs and notes that capture the creative team’s inspiration and vision.

I had the opportunity to check out a screening of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s. For someone who has gone to fashion school, I’m almost ashamed to say that I was never really familiar with Bergdorf Goodman. The only assumption I had was that it was a New York Department Store on 5th Ave that sold expensive things to rich folks.
The documentary consists of collected footage that spans over about 1 ½ years. It includes a look into the store itself – the history, the employees, and the culture. Mixed in were numerous and hilarious interviews with designers that I absolutely adore; Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, and Karl Lagerfeld just to name a few. They shared their story of how they got into Bergdorf Goodman and how the road in wasn’t easy, in fact some designers still aren’t in yet! I was fascinated by all the stories shared and how iconic this store is and how it will be forever.
Although the film does jump all over the place, behind all the footage, there was a little story! It focused on the work of the Visual team at BG. (I feel so cool now saying BG, just like a true Nordstrom shopper says Nordys.) Viewers got to see the behind the scenes planning, preparation, and unveiling of their Holiday window displays. Unbelievably gorgeous!
To sum it up, I now know Bergdorf’s is the best of the best! I would love to make a trip to NYC to see it for myself. If you want to get a dose of fashion or get a look into the BG world the film starts playing this Friday, May 24th at the Varsity Theatre in the U-District!

A week ago, a student organization I'm a part of, TEDxUofW, hosted our second annual event on the University of Washington campus here in Seattle. It was without a doubt one of the most inspirational days to have come out of this campus. I wish more students could have attended. We heard from nine speakers all with varied backgrounds and stories to tell, some of which were current undergraduates, faculty and alumni. Somehow everyone was connected not only to this fine establishment but for a bigger and brighter cause. To purely spread ideas worth knowing. The entire concept behind TED itself is "Ideas worth spreading". It seems so simple yet so empowering and can really go beyond your imagination and yourself.
Being a part of this opportunity and taking on the creative director position has made this entire rollercoaster of an experience worthwhile. It truly astonishes me how incredibly smart young people can be. Three years into my undergrad career, I've realized the capacity we, the young and creative "potentials" have from turning someone's day through random acts of kindness like buying a random person a coffee, creating an ingenious organization to better your community or why not, just create a start-up out of your 10x10 square foot dorm room. Having surrounded myself with such positive and bright people has made me realize how incredibly blessed I am to have what I do have.
Days before the event, while talking with some friends on our way to pick up some last minute items at my favorite store (Costco), it hit me how we were able to hustle our asses off in putting together this event. With a hardcore group of rad people, we collectively came up with sponsors, speakers, our own website, the aesthetics of the room, the center piece cut outs, the lighting, the audio, the video and even the swag bags. We, us measely ol' students, had the capacity to truly accomplish such an amazing day to spread ideas worth knowing.

It's my birthday month but YOU are getting presents!
YAY PRESENTS
In the spirit of 30Fresh, the kind folks at Uber have graciously given me ten $30 Uber credits to give away. According to my texts, FourSquare check-ins and bank statements, Uber is a very big part of my life. For the past year and a half or so, they've been responsible for getting me and many of my fellow Seattleites to meetings, events, flights, nights out and everything else in our busy schedules.
So much Uber swag in my life. Next up, polar fleece pajama pants
Haven't used Uber yet? It's easy. Download the app, request a private driver (in a black car, SUV or as of this month, UberX hybrid car) to your exact location & tell 'em where to go. You can follow the driver's route to you and while you're in the car on your phone, and all of the money transaction takes place in the app, so no need to get cash or search for your card.
'Sup UberX
Living downtown means there are a lot of places where it doesn't quite make sense to drive, but the weather is too crappy to walk (unless you want to show up to your next meeting lookin' a hot mess.) The cabs here are grossly unreliable with even more unsavory customer service all around. I gladly pay a little bit extra to know I'm getting somewhere safe, dry and on time by a nice, friendly driver. Showing up in a towncar is a nice little perk too :)
Flexin' in an Uber SUV on the way to the airport
Enjoy these perks too! Enter to win one of these ten $30 credits by: (each action equals one entry)
I'll draw a winner this Friday, April 26th (my actual bday) at 5:00p.m. PST.
Good luck!
30Fresh. 30 days of posts celebrating 30 years - and 5 of Fresh Jess!
In my quest this year for some improvement in my home's decor and design, simplify and organize seem to be the name of the game. From the lessons learned in my Resolution Challenge to the reiki healing workshops I've been taking (more on that later), the phrase "cleaning out the clutter" has made its presence known in many ways in my life. There's a lot I've been holding on to that just needs to go! We've made a lot of strides in our home by sprucing it up a bit with the throw pillows, rug and table you saw in last week's post. Here are a few ways I've been cutting down and cleaning out the clutter:
The storage room
By moving our work table into the living room, we turned our office/den area into a storage space. My boyfriend and I built these racks to keep old files, snowboard gear & other random stuff. These are so affordable and easy to put together, but we can do so much with them (the racks are adjustable.) These racks go well with the industrial feel of our loft, but if we move, these can easily go into a garage, pantry or storage space.
Obviously not its final home. I was just super stoked after I built it :)
The closet
Spring cleaning is manifesting itself fully in my closet! I've gone through my closet several times this season, re-organizing and finally being very strict on myself in what I kept and what's been cleared out. It's hard breaking up with clothes and things that have sentimental value! Though a lot of my stuff have fond memories tied to them, I know I'll never wear them again. I've donated a lot of my stuff to Goodwill, but for some of my trendy pieces in good condition, I've been using the Poshmark app to sell from my closet & buy fun new pieces from others. Peep my love for Poshmark here.
The fitness
Nothing clears out the mental clutter like a good run around Greenlake! My best friend Sara gave me a Nike FuelBand recently and it's already changed the way I look at my fitness. By adding a gamification angle with setting daily point goals, I'm so much more motivated to figure out ways to get active during the day. I'm choosing the stairs over the elevators more. Walking places instead of driving or taking public transportation. It's funny how a bracelet and a few points can totally kickstart my workout routine, but it's working!
My FuelBand, family and I at The Big Climb last Sunday!

In keeping with the true essence of Fresh Jess - which is to share with you what I'm interested in - I feel obliged to tell you how obsessed I am with Poshmark right now. The amount of time I've spent on there since co-hosting their Winter Essentials Party in Seattle in January is insane. For those who aren't familiar with Poshmark, it's an app that allows you to sell from your closet and buy from others. I have many reasons why I'm so taken by Poshmark right now, so I've packaged them neatly into a top 10 list:
1) The app is clean and simple to use. I like to keep my iPhone screens simple so I only use a few apps, and they've made it far to easy to log on and peep the latest listings from people I'm following, hot items being shared in their Posh Parties, and comments, likes & new follows from my fellow Poshmarkers. The thrill of the find is always there at my fingertips!
2) The faces behind it are super-friendly and are willing to start dance parties with us at events when no one else is dancing and great music is on:
3) This AMAZING blush pink tunic with raw edges and chains dangling off of it:
From @SheelaGoh's closet. Now in my closet!
4) This score of an Opening Ceremony varsity jacket:
5) Whenever you sell something on Poshmark, you can get PM credits or redeem the balance (PM takes 20% of each sale.) I only spend as much as I sell, so basically it's like a clothing swap with stylish ladies around the country!
6) These elbow patches on this sweet knit Zara sweater
7) You can play negotiator and score even better deals by bundling several pieces from a seller's closet at once. I've been looking for the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans for awhile, and got another pair of pants too.
8) With the ability to comment, like and follow people on Poshmark, it's inherently a shopping social network. I've met a lot of cool girls who I already know have amazing fashion sense. Shoutout to @Jojo who's shopped with me. She's awesome! Shop her closet here.
9) Dolce Vita booties on the come up! Such a deal on these.
10) They're growing! It's always fun seeing a start-up find success with the masses. It recently launched an iPad app, secured a $12 million funding round and saw 10x increase in growth over the last 100 days. Insane! (source: VentureBeat)
I feel like I should say that Poshmark did not pay me in any way to write this post. I just felt compelled to write it since I've been spending so much of my time on there lately. All of the items featured in this post are now part of my closet, like treasured finds from hours of thrift or consignment shopping, only from the comfort of my phone!
If you want to join me on Poshmark, use my code "HUWKM" when you download the app, so you can get a $5 credit to start shopping! See you on PM!
My favorite and best-performing posts of the year:
Read MoreI am a huge Harry Potter fan girl. There is nothing quite like geeking out on all things HP with other equally crazy fans. I love it. My favorite character in the books and films (besides Harry of course) is Bellatrix LeStrange, the most diabolical witch on the block. In the films, Bellatrix comes to life thanks to Helena Bonham Carter, who is so absolutely perfect that it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the part.
Interview Magazine recently featured Helena Bonham Carter, in an interview by none other than Daniel Radcliffe himself. Color me the happiest HP fan in the world! They talk about all things Helena, from being raised in an exemplary family to being typecast to working with your love & the father of your children. I've posted a few of my favorite excerpts on self-expression and style below, but you can peep the whole interview over at Interview.

-------
On comparing yourself to others
BONHAM CARTER: Everybody has an inferiority complex when they step into a room. But then when you have children and you get older, it doesn't really matter. When I was young I had so many inferiority complexes. I had an inferiority complex because I didn't go to university. I had an inferiority complex because I didn't train. Then it gets tiring. And you do get bored of it.
RADCLIFFE: Right. And so that boredom is actually what ultimately leads you to go, "Oh, fuck it."
BONHAM CARTER: "Fuck it" is my guiding philosophy.
-------
Self-perception
RADCLIFFE: I think people see your career as almost having two halves, one where you played this kind of ingénue. And then there's a perception that around the time you met Tim [Burton], you started getting weird. But I know you'd been weird long before that.
BONHAM CARTER: I was weird right from the start. It's just that you can't ever expect people to get you. And I do think that really did mess with my head, being well-known young, when you really don't know who you are. This is how ridiculous I was: I'd sometimes go look at a written profile of me and see how I was described and say, "Oh, is that who I am?" You can't ever put your self-definition in the hands of somebody who meets you for 15 minutes.
-------
"Do you have to be the witch or the queen tomorrow?" I thought, Well, that's pretty much my life.
-------
Personal style
RADCLIFFE: Would you describe yourself as being into fashion? I know you have your style—self-expression, really.
BONHAM CARTER: All I'm into is dressing up. I love dressing up. It's like what we do for our job, get paid to dress up. So I carry on doing it in life, and I do put on a bit of clothing, and the clothing changes how I feel.
-------
On being typecast
RADCLIFFE: For me, it seems to be about getting audiences accustomed to seeing me in different things. There is never going to be one part that's going to totally separate me from 10 years in a part that I loved, you know? And I would never want to be totally separated from it.
BONHAM CARTER: I think in time, you will, darling.
RADCLIFFE: Really?
BONHAM CARTER: Honestly, people have such short memories. Absolutely.
After reading the first book on my cruise last month, rushing home to finish the other two then seeing the movie multiple times, I think it's safe to say I'm a little taken by the Hunger Games trilogy right now. I've even made a Pinterest board with some of my equally-obsessed friends.
So indulge me for a few minutes.
There are scores of posts on fashion blogs and even an official Capitol Couture site - but what stuck with me was how very Northwest Katniss' woods and the 74th Hunger Games arena was. Who knows, maybe District 12 is where Seattle could've once been?

I had a lot of fun with this style post, finding some stylish alternatives to the tributes' arena uniforms. While I hope I never have to go through anything like the Hunger Games, if I did I'd gravitate towards these pieces. Enjoy!

I'm embarrassed that the first time I've ever seen Marion Cotillard act is in Public Enemies as Billie Frechette to Johnny Depp's John Dillinger. Better late than never, right? I don't watch a lot of films :) She's my latest girl crush!
Marion is one of the most celebrated French actresses of all time. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose" and is continuing to rack up accolades all around the world. You may have seen her in Big Fish, Taxi and A Good Year in addition to many French films.
I love her style. She was my favorite part of "Nine" :)

this weekend we caught "This is It" - a peek into what was to be MJ's last hurrah. i highly recommend seeing it while it's out in theatres. you really get a sense of why Michael is such a one-of-a-kind. the magic he brings to the stage wasn't lost in the midst of all the scandal and craziness that haunted him for most of the past couple of decades!
one of my favorite parts of the movie was seeing MJ continue his streak of trend-setting jackets. throughout the whole movie, we see him donning peak-shouldered, fitted blazers - much like the ones favored by rihanna, karl lagerfeld, victoria beckham and perfected by designers like balmain & preen. one of my favorite girls, Jordana of Clutch 22, styled the puff shoulder in a recent post!
check the trailer - then view a few of my favorite variations. God bless you and your impeccable style, MJ!
this weekend my bf is hiking around Forks & La Push - and for a Twilight freak such as myself, this is kind of a big deal. if you were paying any attention during the movie, you will remember Edward's comment: "Why did you move to the wettest place in the continental U.S.?"
Well, whether hot Cullen is correct or not, while perusing Karmaloop i took it upon myself to find a few pieces i would take along if i were with bf now, traipsing around Twilight stomping grounds:
"the wettest place in the continental U.S." calls for... The RVCA slicker - $105
lumberjill - The RVCA McLean shirt - $53
versatile sweats - The Joyrich Love Lounge pants - $48
because a Northwest girl can never have too many fleeces - The Burton Darling fleece - $65
in case i feel the urge to jump off a cliff...this won't fall off - The Selina onepiece - $50
and of course... - The Bella jacket by B.B. Dakota - $70
