Fresh Reads: Spring 2016

In the last few weeks, we've moved from beautiful South Lake Union to vibrant Capitol Hill, celebrated a birthday, had a bachelorette weekend getaway to Whidbey Island (for another bride, not me) and another weekend in Ojai and L.A. for a wedding (and some Harry Potter fun.) More details in a later post of course!

With this much transition, our routines have been more important than ever. Reading has brought me many quiet moments of reflection and sanity among the chaos. Here are three of my most recent reads:

I would absolutely recommend all three of these, and have lent out two out of these three already!

I started following Roxane Gay on Twitter about a year ago, and she's by far one of my favorite voices out there. Bad Feminist is a collection of essays that are both hilarious and heart-wrenching at the same damn time. I especially loved the ones about Sweet Valley High and 50 Shades of Grey. She will leave you thinking about your own definition of feminism for a long time after.

I don't know that I need to say a whole lot about Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me since I seem to be the last human being on earth who's read it. Just read this letter to his son about all the considerations encircling a black man living in this world and this society today.  It will leave an imprint on your mind like no other.

Padma Lakshmi's Love, Loss and What We Ate memoir was a bit hard to get into at first - and seemed to jump around to different times in her life a lot - but I loved it nonetheless. We need more women of color (and female immigrants) sharing their experiences in navigating different cultures - and not feeling quite at home anywhere. Her story is just a bit more glamorous than mine :)
